During return from first war patrol the U 415 was attacked three times by aircrafts from Coastal Command: was attacked with depth charges by a British Halifax aircraft from Nº. 502 Sqdn RAF and suffered serious damages, later the boat was attacked with depth charges by an Australian Sunderland flying boat from Nº. 461 Sqdn RAAF; later the boat was attacked with depth charges by an British Whitley aircraft from Nº. 612 Sqdn RAF. When sailing in the Gulf of Byscaia at the beginning of the second patrol the U 415 was attacked with depth charges by British Whitley aircraft from Nº. 10 OTU Squadron RAF, the boat dive and evaded without damage. One aborted patrol, Kptlt. Kurt Neide was forced to return and put the boat in Brest after 7 daysat sea for repairs after a air attack by British Wellington aircraft from Nº. 612 Sqdn RAF causing extensive damages. During return from fourth war patrol the U 415 was attacked by British Halifax bomber from Nº. 58 Sqdn RAF, the aircraft dropped 6 depth charges but failed to sink the boat which returned fire and dived to escape and arrived at Brest on the next day. Sunk 1 steam merchant ship 4.917 GRT, sunk 1 destroyer 1.340 Dton and damaged 1 steam merchant ship 5.486 GRT. Kptlt. Kurt Neide was replaced by Oblt.z.S. Herbert Werner.) |
