Footnote : US tanker "Gulfstar", towing fuel oil barge YO 159, and escorted by PC 1138, was about 250 miles to eastward of Espiritu Santo, en route thereto from San Pedro. About 2100 (minus 11), the convoy was attacked by an enemy submarine, and the tow was set on afire, presumably by a torpedo. "Gulf Star" cast off the tow, and proceeded independently, leaving PC 1138 to rescue 14 survivors of YO 159. YO 159 sank the following night, with 8 of her crew missing.
