| Btsm Georg BERNHEIDEN, U 662. VIIC. (09.42-05.43) 3. Unternehmung unter Korvettenkapitän Wolfgang Hermann und unter Kapitänleutnant Heinz-Eberhard Müller, 3 Schiffe mit 18.609 BRT versenken und 1 Schiff mit 7.174 BRT beschädigen. U 852. IXD2. unter Kapitänleutnant Heinz-Wilhelm Eck, lief am 18.01.1944 von Kiel aus. Nach dem Marsch über die Ostsee, sowie Ergänzungen in Kristiansand, operierte das Boot im Mittelatlantik, im Südatlantik, im Indischen Ozean, im Arabischen Meer und vor der Küste Somalias. Es gehörte zur U Boot-Gruppe Monsun 3. Am 02.05.1944 wurden bei einem Fliegerangriff 2 Mann getötet. Nach 106 Tagen wurde U 852, wurde nach schweren Beschädigungen durch britische Flugzeuge, selbst gesprengt. U 852 konnte auf dieser Unternehmung 2 Schiffe mit 9.972 BRT versenken. Überlebende: 03.05.44.Pow. Pow.No.46006. Died of illness, Cannock Chase (GB). Block 3. Grave 391. Sworn Statment from Georg Bernheiden 21.Aug.1944 camp 7. In Oct 1939 I joined the Navy and after normal training went to sea in U Boots. Before U 852's first patrol I joined her and since then I have sailed in this boat. At the time of the sinking of the steamer PELEUS I was at my Action Station as part of the bridge watch as lookout on the port side forward. After the sinking I saw a survivor being interrogated on the Foo'sle forward. He went back to his raft and we went slow ahead. Since I had been ordered to keep watch in my sector I could not observe what went on afterwards. A short while later I heard machine gun and 20.mm fire but I could not see who was firing. Only once did I see the second Lieutenant, Hoffmann throwing a hand grenade. I was relieved before midnight, went below and turned in. | |
