Gefechtsbericht A: | 55th (Bradford) führt mit 4 'D'-Booten (Lt.'s Smith, Marshall, Whitby) Angriff auf Kampfverband mit 'Northern" Class Trawlers (oder Korvetten), gefolgt von 5-6 R-Booten und einem Trawler oder Minensuchboot. Im Gefecht mehrere Explosionen auf gegnerischen Booten, MTB 624 (Lt. Marshall) durch Nahtreffer beschädigt. -- Bradford reported: I gave the order to open fire at the second in line and real salvos of 6-pounder shells flew on their way. The target received four shells as one (…) and the corvette blew up. I shifted the boats on to the next target, the leading R-Boat and (…) she exploded, cocked her stern in the air and sank before our eyes. (…) The battle started to reach a crescendo as enemy gunners got our range and German shore batteries added their full weight. We were outgunned (…) had one last quick run in and saw that two more R-Boats were smoking and damaged, and then I led off, it was time to go. When we disengaged, Lt. Marshall had real bad luck. A 8-inch shell from the shore batteries plunged underneath the stern and exploded under his boat (MTB 624). At first, the boat seemed to be a wreck, Engines, petrol tanks, all the fittings had broken loose from their mountings. But the CO did not seem dismayed. Over R/T he reported a near miss, then on he struggled and, what is mure, made it. |
