Gefechtsbericht A: | Beschreibung eines fehlgeschlagenen Angriffs auf ein Tanker-Geleit : (1) In anticipation of the possible movement of the Tanker T.38 northward from Boulogne the following patrols were assumed at 2300 yesterday. Group Z: M.T.Bs 361, (S.O), 353 and 354 at East Varne Buoy to attack off Ambleteuse ; Group A: M.T.Bs 231 (S.O), 211, 202 at number 7 Buoy to attack off Wissant under cover of our coastal batteries. (2) At 0250 Shore Based Radar detected one large vessel and 10 escorts leaving Boulogne northward and Group Z was ordered to proceed to attack. Enemy proceeded northward at 12 knots but when four miles south of Cape Gris Nez turned back slowly towards Boulogne which was entered at 0525. M.T.Bs 353 and 354 lost contacts with M.T.B.361 in very low visibility and returned to East Varne Buoy. M.T.B.361 obtained radar contact believed to be the main target at a range of 3500 yards and closed to attack in Boulogne Harbour entrance but was unable to sight any vessel in thick fog. The target echo became confused with shore echoes when M.T.B.361 was five cables from Boulogne Breakwater Light and she withdrew when it became apparent that the enemy had entered Boulogne. (3) Groups A and Z were recalled when it was seen that the enemy was entering Boulogne as were M.T.Bs. 699, 705, 698, 359 and 362 which had been sailed to attack off Gravelines.[1] |
